California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Irwin St. John Tucker (1886-1982) was an Episcopal priest as well as a socialist and journalist. Tucker worked as a journalist for The Christian Socialist and Chicago Herald-American. At the time of his retirement from the Herald-American in 1954, Irwin Tucker was the paper's religion editor. He also contributed poetry, under the pseudonym Friar Tuck, to the Chicago Tribune.
